Tablelands Brook Falls

 

Tablelands Brook Falls are located in an area of unique rocky terrain found in the Tablelands area of southwestern Gros Morne National Park.  The Tablelands area is composed of deep earth rock, thrust to the surface during shifting of the earth's geological plates.   The rock does not support life chemically making for similar terrain only seen above the treeline, such as in the Rocky Mountains.  The falls have several drops as they work their way down from the plateau. There is a small beaten path that you can hike along the brook towards the top of the falls.

To get there: Head to Gros Morne National Park toward Trout River on Bonne Bay Rd.  After 4 kilometres west from the Discovery Centre, a parking lot for the Tablelands area is on the south side of the road.  Park here, head along the Tablelands trail for approximately 1 kilometre and a waterfall will be visible. 

Middle Brook Falls (Glenburnie)

Middle Brook Falls at Glenburnie are a dual level cascade fall  found between Wiltondale and Woody Point just outside of Gros Morne National Park.  The falls are a well known spot among locals for swimming during the hot days of summer. The falls are surrounded by steep hills and dark textured rock, adding to the location. 

To access the falls, park at the Middle Brook Cottages lot.  With permission, you can walk through the cottage grounds to the power pole past the playground.  A short trail will lead you to the south side of the bank, allowing access to the pool.  For better photos of the falls, walk across an old stone bridge and take the far bank, walking toward the falls.  The solid rock bank can be slippery, be careful reaching the falls.  Once around the slight bend, you will see a great vantage point for photos.  

To get there: Take highway 430 (Viking Trail) from Deer Lake toward Wiltondale.  At Wiltondale, take the Bonne Bay road toward Trout River and Lommond.  Just before Glenburnie, watch for the parking lot on your left.

Southeast Brook Falls

Southeast Brook Falls are one of two official waterfall trails in Gros Morne National Park.  Southeast brook falls cascade and drop over distinctively familiar rock, almost 30 metres from the top.  Unfortunately, there is very little view of the entire fall, as the trail only leads to the top.  A trecherous path leads to a rocky outcrop halfway down the slide, but unless the visitor is confortable with climbing using roots and rocks, it is not recommended.

To get there: Head along Hwy 430 (Viking Trail) toward Rocky Harbour from the park entrance.  The trailhead is nine kilometres from Wiltondale.  Park and hike half a kilometre to the landing at the top of the falls.

Western Brook Gorge Falls

Western Brook Gorge Falls are one of the many waterfalls visible from water level at Western Brook Pond.  These falls flow from the higher plateaus originating from ponds, lakes and streams at 800 meters or more of elevation. 

Access to the falls is limited to the Western Brook Pond Ferry, a boat tour that runs the length of the pond as part of Gros Morne National Park.  Ferry tickets are available from Bon Tours at the OceanView Motel in Rocky Harbour or at the dock. Unless you have a backcountry pass, the only view from the boat is at a distance.  However, if you have a backcountry pass and are planning to do a hike along the North Rim or Long Range Traverse , your hike will take you to the base of the falls near the end of Western Brook Pond Gorge. Depending on your travel, you will be climbing above or down from the base of the falls.  

To get a sight via ferry: Take highway 430 (Viking Trail) toward St. Anthony from Rocky Harbour.  Park at the Western Brook Pond parking lot and hike 2.5km to the ferry dock.

Pissing Mare Falls

Pissing Mare Falls are one of the many waterfalls visible from water level at Western Brook Pond.  These falls flow from the higher plateau south of Western Brook Pond, originating from ponds, lakes and streams at 800 meters or more of elevation. 

Access to the falls is limited to the Western Brook Pond Ferry, a boat tour that runs the length of the pond as part of Gros Morne National Park.  Ferry tickets are available from Bon Tours at the OceanView Motel in Rocky Harbour or at the dock. If you have a backcountry pass and are planning to do a hike along the North Rim or Long Range Traverse (and have time to do a short excursion), you can hike around the end of Western Brook Pond to the base of the old flowage.  From there, hike and climb the large rocks toward the falls to have a great view of the falls and the length of Western Brook Pond.

To get there: Take highway 430 (Viking Trail) toward St. Anthony from Rocky Harbour.  Park at the Western Brook Pond parking lot and hike 2.5km to the ferry dock.

White Point Falls

 

White Point Falls are one of the many waterfalls visible from water level at Western Brook Pond.  These falls flow from the higher plateau south of Western Brook Pond, originating from ponds, lakes and streams at 800 meters or more of elevation.

Woody Pond Falls

Woody Pond Falls are one of the many waterfalls visible from water level at Western Brook Pond.  These falls flow from the higher plateau of the North Rim, originating from ponds, lakes and streams at 800 meters or more of elevation.

Blue Denium Falls

Blue Denium Falls are one of the many waterfalls visible from water level at Western Brook Pond.  These falls flow from the higher plateau of the North Rim, originating from ponds at 800 meters or more of elevation.

Bakers Brook Falls

Bakers Brook Falls are found on one of two official waterfall trails in Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland. Bakers Brook runs through the barrens of the Long Range Mountains, descending toward the ocean.  Two sets of falls can be found along the trail, the second of which has a two tiered cascade. 

To get there:  Head to Gros Morne National Park in Western Newfoundland.  Take highway 430 (Viking Trail) north through Rocky Harbour.  Take the exit for Berry Hill Campground.  After the campground wicket, keep on the road to see the trailhead on the left.  Take the 5km trail toward the falls, watch for the first set of falls approximately 500m before the main falls area.  Swimming is possible at the second falls.

Steady Brook Falls

A spectacular surprise best describes these waterfalls found near Marble Mountain Resort in Western Newfoundland.  While not even visible from the road, these falls fall almost 100 metres from Steady Brook toward the Transcanada Highway and the Massey River.  Also at the site are zipline tours which take you across the falls in several different routes. 

To get there:  Go to Steady Brook, just outside of Corner Brook on the TCH toward Deer Lake.  Look for the Marble Mountain Resort on the south side of the highway.  Take the exit for Marble Mountain Resort and follow the service road toward the gas station and McDonalds restaurant.  Keep past the stores, follow until a dirt road begins on your left, heading steeply uphill. There are signs that point to the falls.  Park near the field that opens up to the ski resort.  The trailhead will be behind you, starting with a wooden bridge over the ditch.  Walk a short distance to the lookoff and continue uphill to the top of the falls, passing the zipline platforms.  You should pass 3 platforms before reaching the top of the falls, noticeable by a small clearing.  Use caution climbing near the falls especially given the height involved. Another way to access the falls is to rockhop your way upstream, allowing for some great swimming the pools below the falls.
